Orr Builders has completed construction for a 22,000-square-foot (2,500-square-meter) office building situated on Lot No. 1 in Desert Business Park, a new 80-acre (32-hectare) professional campus, located in Palm Desert, California. Smith Consulting Architects provided full architectural services for the office building. The firm was retained by Investco Financial Corporation, project developer, with Marsha Vincelette serving as project manager. The building serves as the gateway to the new business park, and is conveniently located off the Interstate 10 freeway. Its design allows for views looking out to the surrounding desert landscape and picturesque mountains.

Corgan Associates, Inc. announced plans to break ground on a new corporate office building in Dallas' West End on vacant land acquired by the firm. The three-story, 60,000 square-foot (5,575 square-meter) building will be occupied solely by Corgan, a Dallas, Texas-based architecture and design firm, and will initially house 250 professionals with future expansion capacity to 325. Corgan's building will be the first new construction project in the historic district in more than 10 years, and it will be LEED certified. Construction on the project will begin in January 2006 with occupancy expected in January 2007. Turner Construction of Dallas has been selected as the general contractor.

Highmark Data Center, designed by RTKL Associate, Inc., has officially opened. The 87,000 square-foot (8,080 square-meter) data center, an 11-acre (4.5-hectare) sloped site in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, is a mission critical facility that uses a sophisticated network connecting more than 100 hospitals and 15,000 healthcare providers. The data center integrates an innovative new cooling system, Tower of Cool, which was developed and patented by RTKL and R. Stephen Spinazzola, vice president and director of engineering for RTKL Associates, Inc., to regulate temperature for sensitive equipment. The data center is designed to meet U.S. Green Building Council, LEED criteria, silver rating.

Smith Consulting Architects has design underway for a new three-story shell building that eventually will house an integrated corporate office and fitness club for 24 Hour Fitness in Carlsbad, California. Biltmore Holdings LLC is the developer of the 13.4-acre (5.4-hectare) site, with west coast Biltmore partner Thomas Smith, leading the project. The facility ultimately will consist of 50,000 square feet (4,645 square meters) of office space and 39,000 square feet (3,623 square meters) of health club space. Construction is scheduled to begin in December, with completion scheduled for fall 2006. Scott Cairns is vice president-in-charge for Smith Consulting Architects, with Bill Sharon as vice president of design and Andrew Tarango as project manager.

Specialists in laboratory planning and design, both Le and Vissa are based in the firm's Washington, D.C. office. Le has 19 years of experience as an architect including six years specializing in research institutes and laboratory spaces. Prior to joining RTKL, Le served as a project architect and lab planner with Zimmer Gunsul Frasca. Gayathri Vissa has over 13 years of experience as an architect and laboratory planner including five years planning and designing biocontainment facilities and vivariums. Prior to joining RTKL, she served as project architect and planner for SmithGroup in Washington, D.C.

Rafael Viñoly Architects (RVA) has awarded a research grant to Joseph Hagerman, a graduate of Mississippi State University College of Architecture, who is pursuing a master of science in civil engineering at the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science at Columbia University. He will be in residence at the New York offices of RVA until September 2006, researching ways to improve the environmental performance as well as the formal possibilities of green roofs.
