    SmithGroup has promoted Anne Belleau-Mills, principal and healthcare studio leader, and Kevin Shultis, principal and learning studio leader, to vice president of its Detroit, Michigan office. Belleau-Mills's leadership in her 14 years with SmithGroup has included healthcare facilities and medical-related research facilities in addition to office/workplace design. Shultis has over 20 years of design and management experience in the architecture profession. Before joining SmithGroup, Inc., he spent 15 years with Gunnar Birkerts and Associates of Birmingham, Michigan and joined SmithGroup as a project manager in 1998. SmithGroup also promoted Russ Sykes to managing director, Paul Tonti to director of operations, Terry Guitar to director of architecture, Marie Sayer to accounting manager, and Robert Russell to accounting coordinator.

    Architecture and interiors firm RSP Architects has hired eleven additional employees this past quarter to join their professional team. New members include: Amber Davis, Alissa Carlson, Cynthia Ingenthron, Jill Inouye, David Marr, Farshad Najafpour, Shawn Petree, Michelle Reineke, Deirdre Rowles, Dat Tran and John Williams. Staff in the Tempe, Arizona office now exceed 45 employees with over 250 employees firm wide.

    A long-time and dedicated member of the Boston, Massachusetts architectural community, David Wexler, CPA and Partner of DiCicco, Gulman & Company LLP, became the first non-architect and one of the first individuals to receive an Honorary Masters of Architecture degree from the Boston Architectural Center (BAC). The degree was awarded in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the BAC while performing as Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee from 1996 to 2004.

    Adache Group Architects has added three new staff members to their Pensacola, Florida offices. Tony Noles, AIA, NCARB brings over 30 years experience to the firm. He has been responsible for the design and project management of a wide variety of project types including multifamily residential housing, healthcare facilities, medical office buildings, libraries, and K-12 educational facilities. Ivo Alcala joins Adache Group Architects with 10 years of experience in the realm of commercial and high end residential architecture. Prior to Joining the Adache team, Ivo collaborated on several condominium and hospitality projects along the Gulf Coast. David Murphy is a Florida native with 12 years of experience on a broad range of projects. Prior to joining Adache, he was responsible for design, construction documentation, and finish materials selection for medical offices, educational facilities, and condominium projects.

    The new University of Wisconsin Cancer Center at Johnson Creek, a 14,300 square foot (1,330 square meter) building designed by OWP/P, opened in October. The facility is a joint partnership among UW Health, Fort Atkinson Health System, and Watertown Memorial Hospital. Situated between Milwaukee and Madison, Wisconsin, the center bridges the gap by offering rural access to leading-edge cancer care, including medical oncology, radiation oncology, and chemotherapy treatment. The building was designed to fit into the landscape with inspiration from rural architecture: metal roofs, post-and-beam construction, brick, glass, and split-faced concrete block.

    Rachlin Architects' Dena Primary Center, Los Angeles, California's Boyle Heights' neighborhood first new primary school in 50 years, had its official opening ceremony. Design for the 2.9 acre (1.2 hectare) campus includes 10 classrooms for 250 students, a library, multipurpose space, food service, and administrative offices, and features an outdoor amphitheatre-style central courtyard and allows for future addition of classrooms. Part of Los Angeles Unified School District's major building effort, the new Dena Primary Center alleviates overcrowding at the neighborhood's Dena Elementary School as a new school for students in kindergarten through second grade. LAUSD began building 160 new schools throughout the district in 2002. To date, 49 schools, 35 expansions and 17 early education centers have been built and 42 schools are under construction.

    A building formerly used as a dormitory by a professional baseball team has a new lease on life as Florida’s “greenest” office building thanks to Architect Michael R. Carlson, AIA, LEED AP, founder and principal of Carlson Studio Architecture, a Sarasota, Florida-based architecture and design firm specializing in sustainable, high performance buildings. The U.S. Green Building Council has presented Sarasota County’s Twin Lakes Park Office Complex with LEED Gold Certification in the new construction category, one of the nation’s highest honors for environmental sustainability. The facility earned 41 points, giving it the distinction of being the highest LEED-scored building in the state to date.

    2enCompass, an integrated design and construction cooperative venture between Steed Hammond Paul and Messer Construction, announced it will begin offering its innovative strategy to the education market in Indianapolis, Indiana. They offer combined architectural and construction services.

    Pam Touschner, AIA, partner in charge of WWCOT’s Inland Empire and Coachella Valley operations, has been elected first vice president/president elect for the American Institute of Architects, California Council (AIACC), the nation’s largest state architectural organization. Touschner will be the first woman to lead the 10,000-member trade group since Roberta Jorgensen, FAIA in 1997, and only the fourth woman to hold the post since the AIACC was founded in 1946.  Her one-year term as president will start on January 1, 2007 when she will succeed newly elected president John Melcher, AIA. This year’s outgoing president is Stephan Castellanos, FAIA.

    Construction has begun on 108 North State, a major mixed-use destination located in the heart of Chicago's Loop. Gensler is design architect of the 400,000 square-foot (37,160 square-meter) retail, entertainment, and transportation component of the project that also includes office space, a ground-level broadcast studio, a luxury hotel, and residential units. The Mills Corporation is owner and developer; Perkins + Will is architect of record for the office tower; and Rockwell Group is responsible for interior design and signage. The state-of-the-art CTA transit station will provide service to O'Hare and Midway airports in Illinois.

    In Carmarthenshire, southwest Wales, John Belle, FAIA, RIBA, a founding partner of Beyer Blinder Belle Architects & Planners LLP, unveiled his design for a new tropical conservatory, to be built for the Double Walled Garden of the National Botanic Garden of Wales. Situated on the 568-acre (230-hectare) Middleton Estate, whose history goes back some 400 years, the National Botanic Garden of Wales opened its doors to the public in May 2000 as a Millennium Commission. It was the first new national garden to be established in Britain for 200 years.
