Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #264
Question
If you requested a new tree with a two-inch (51-millimeter) caliper, you would be referring to the diameter of the trunk of the tree. At what height would you take this measurement? If your surveyor said that there was an old oak on the property with a 42-inch (1067-millimeter) caliper trunk, at what height would this measurement have been taken?
Answer
With trees up to a 4-inch (102-millimeter) caliper, the measurement is taken at 6 inches (152 millimeters) above the ground. With larger trees, the measurement is taken at 12 inches (305 millimeters) above the ground.
