Fort Ticonderoga broke ground today for the Deborah Clarke Mars Education Center, designed by Tonetti Associates Architects of New York City. When completed, the LEED-certified "green" building will recreate the last of the major original Fort structures to be rebuilt. Years of research in primary documents and at historic sites of French origin in North America, as well as on-site archaeology, will result in the exterior of the Education Center being the most accurate reconstruction possible of the 1756 magasin du Roi (or King's warehouse). The Mars Education Center will house a modern, year-round, state-of-the-art learning environment featuring an interactive exhibit space for changing exhibits from the Fort's vast collection of 18th-century objects and archives, four learning laboratories, a multipurpose gallery, and a 180-person auditorium.
