VERANDA PARKING IN ROTTERDAM Is it possible for a parking garage to be sexy? The new Veranda Parking Garage in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, with its soft curves and elegant detailing, seems as sensuous and inviting as a garage can get. Designed by the architecture firm of Paul de Ruiter, (photo by Rien van Rijthoven) part of the Vernanda's allure, like most things sexy, is in what you can’t see. Next week ArchitectureWeek contributing editor Michael J. Crosbie will explain the extraordinary story of the building's construction.

CANADIANS LEAD IN SUSTAINABILITY AWARDS On September 30, 2005, the Swiss Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction announced the North American winners in its annual awards program. The Holcim Foundation rewards projects that go beyond technical solutions to include process, human behavior, and visionary city planning. Next week we¹ll look at the top three projects, including gold award winner, "Greening the Infrastructure at Benny Farm" in Montréal, Québec, by the Canadian firm L'OEUF/ Pearl Poddubiuk et Associés, Architectes.
