    McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. has announced the recent hire of Chuck Shive as civil estimator in the Dallas, Texas office. In this role, Shive will be responsible for various estimating and bidding activities associated with the company's civil construction projects. Prior to joining McCarthy, Shive served as engineering manager with J. L. Steel, L.P., and was responsible for all project management, engineering and administration functions for the company's civil group.

    Pugh + Scarpa and Eskew+Dumez+Ripple (Studio EDR) are collaborating on a new project in Hendersonville, North Carolina. The Mill Center for the Arts is a new 100,000-square-foot (9290-square-meter) cultural complex located in the heart of the downtown district. The program includes a 1200-seat performing arts theatre, a black box theatre, a children’s museum, event center, art galleries, classrooms, artist studios, and administrative offices, for an estimated total cost of $26,000,000. Inspired by the Carolina Mountains, the building envelope is composed of ionized metal panels with its surface perforated and etched with a composite of native trees. The skin floats over the weather-tight envelope of the building's interior.

    Lilian T. Chiu is joining the architectural and engineering firm Bermello, Ajamil and Partners, Inc. (B&A) as director of marketing. Chiu will lead all firm-wide marketing strategic operations, in conjunction with Scott Lagueux, vice president of marketing. B&A's corporate marketing team is headquartered in Miami, Florida where Chiu will be primarily located. Previously, she served as marketing manager for the international architectural firm of Perkins+Will and also spent more than a decade as partner and business development manager at Sackman2, Architects + Planners.

    The University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland, has completed the construction of the Jeong H. Kim Engineering Building. SmithGroup had primary responsibility for architectural design, project management, engineering, cost estimating, and lab planning. The building was officially dedicated on September 19, 2005. The Kim Engineering Building is the new home of the A. James Clark School of Engineering. This building is the focal element of the engineering campus master plan. Located at the center of the expanding engineering campus, the facility will include student project display spaces and an Inventors Hall of Fame within multi-storied spaces.

    Partridge Architects of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, announced that Carly Hering has joined the firm as interior designer. A graduate of Philadelphia University, Carly brings five years experience in corporate space planning and facilities management to the firm. She was most recently an interior designer at RHM Associates where she served as on-site designer and project manager for GlaxoSmithKline. She will work on a variety of projects at the firm.

    BBT Architects Inc. of Bend, Oregon, have announced the establishment of a new hospitality division. To head up this division, BBT Architects has brought Joe Avotins on board as director of hospitality services to concentrate on expanding design and development services for both local and national clients within the hospitality, restaurant, and resort industry. Avotins has been involved in numerous projects and building types in this field, with experience including directing his own design firm in Bend, specializing in supporting the hospitality industry.

    4240 Architecture Inc. has announced the promotions of Hooman Aryan and Geoffrey Brooksher, AIA, LEED, to senior associates in the firm's offices in Denver, Colorado, and Chicago, Illinois, respectively. In Aryan's current capacity as team leader at the firm's Denver Studio, he has been a designer, technical coordinator, and construction administrator.  He is currently assigned to the reconstruction and revitalization of Vail Village. Geoffrey Brooksher is both technical director of the 4240 Architecture Chicago studio, and head of 4240's Sustainable Architecture Task Force. Brooksher's 4240 projects include 200 Fillmore, a repositioned office building in the Cherry Creek section of Denver, and new offices for the Spencer Foundation, a Chicago-based educational watchdog organization.
