                                                        . . . THIS WEEK

    Pasadena · 2005.0906
Barton Chambers, AIA, has joined F+A Architects as senior vice president and director of design. Chambers brings more than 25 years of experience in large-scale domestic and international urban planning, hospitality, retail, and mixed-use projects to the 32-year-old firm. In his new position at the firm's offices in Pasadena, California, Chambers will lead and oversee all of F+A’s design work. Just before joining F+A, Chambers was principal designer at Peddle Thorp Blair & Chambers, an international architecture, planning, urban design, and project management firm. Prior to that, Chambers spent 23 years at RTKL Associates Inc., in the Dallas, London, and Los Angeles offices.

    La Jolla · 2005.0906
Construction is complete for the remodeling of the 4,700-square-foot branch office of Ironstone Bank located at 833 Pearl Street in La Jolla, California. Lyons Warren provided structural engineering services for the project. Smith Consulting Architects provided architectural services for the $400,000 project, with Mark Langan serving as vice-president-in-charge, and Garry Potter as project architect. First Citizens Bank is the building owner. The scope of work for Lyons Warren included structural engineering of a new entry tower, facade, and drive-thru to the existing bank. The project was completed on time and within budget.

    Dongtan · 2005.0906
Arup, the global planning, engineering, and design consultancy, has signed a contract with Shanghai Industrial Investment Corporation (SIIC) to plan the world's first sustainable city - an "eco-city" - at Dongtan, in Shanghai, China. The city, three-quarters the size of Manhattan, is strategically situated close to Shanghai on the third largest island in China, at the mouth of the Yangtze River. The area is now mostly agricultural land. Dongtan aims to mitigate its impact on climate change by reducing damaging emissions and moving towards a carbon neutral city. It will do this by developing a comprehensive energy strategy incorporating large-scale renewable energy technologies. The city will aim to live from its own water resources through conservation, recycling, and living treatment systems.

    Phoenix · 2005.0901
Joseph Murray has joined DFD CornoyerHedrick's offices in Phoenix, Arizona as a senior designer. He brings 18 years experience on myriad building types to the firm. Murray will focus on retail, highrise residential, office, and mixed-use projects. A self-confessed "architecture geek," Murray studied design at California State Polytechnic University, Southern California Institute of Architecture, and Arizona State University. His work to date has won several industry awards.

    San Francisco · 2005.0901
SmithGroup has hired Kacey Clagett as development director. Clagett will direct and coordinate all public relations and business development activity for SmithGroup’s San Francisco and Los Angeles, California offices. Her responsibilities include raising industry and public awareness of SmithGroup as a strong design firm, supporting project pursuits in both offices, and providing ongoing direction and assistance to SmithGroup’s new and developing practice areas. She comes to SmithGroup after four years with Studios Architecture in San Francisco, where she was most recently an associate principal and director of marketing.

    Atlanta · 2005.0830
William R. Halter, AIA, has joined the Atlanta, Georgia office of global architectural design firm HOK (Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum) as design director. He has worked on various projects including BellSouth's Campanile building in Atlanta, Georgia; the Three First Union Center in Charlotte, North Carolina; the Summit Office Towers in Atlanta, Georgia; Saint Joseph's Campus Master Plan and Doctors Office Building Four; the Turner Entertainment Office Building (under construction); and the New China International Exhibition Center in Beijing, China. Halter joined HOK following 25 years with the Atlanta office of Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback (TVS).
