    Quizzical Pursuit
    —The Architecture Puzzler

    Created by Dave Guadagni

    Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
    Architecture Puzzler #254

    Question

Doric, Corinthian, and Ionic are three classical orders in which there is a specified ratio between the diameter of the column and its height (measured between the pedestal and the entablature). The simplest is the most stout, and the most elegant (in terms of detailing) is the slimmest. Which has a column height equal to 8 column diameters? Equal to 9 diameters? Equal to 10 diameters?

    Answer

    Doric — 8 Diameters
    Ionic — 9 Diameters
    Corinthian — 10 Diameters
And, in case you were wondering, the Tuscan column is stouter than the Doric at 7 diameters, and the Composite is similar to the Corinthian at 10 diameters.
