    Kansas City · 2005.0718
James Poulson, AIA, has returned to Ellerbe Becket. He joins Jon Niemuth, AIA, as a design director in the firm’s Kansas City, Missouri sports practice. For the past year, Poulson has been helping run his family’s farm operation in Nebraska. He left Ellerbe Becket in 2002 and spent two years with Seattle architectural firm BJSS before moving to Nebraska. Poulson spent 13 years with Ellerbe Becket as one of its top designers. He did two projects for Paul Allen: The Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon (home of the NBA Trailblazers) and Qwest Field in Seattle, Washington (home of the NFL Seahawks).

    Chicago · 2005.0718
Loebl Schlossman & Hackl of Chicago, Illinois has introduced three new hires. Richard M. Smith, LEED, has joined the firm as a principal in the firm’s higher education practice. Smith's recent work includes the newly renovated Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, the new student center and classroom buildings for Waubonsee Community College, and the new University of Minnesota McGuire Translational Research Facility. Kathryn Perino Meigel has joined the interior design staff. Her experience in the design process includes programming, design development, space planning, and coordination of contract documents. Richard Johnson has been added to the architectural design staff. Prior to joining the firm, Johnson held design roles at Johnson & Lee Architects and at Fujikawa, Johnson & Associates, both located in Chicago.

    Seoul · 2005.0718
Ellerbe Becket and Junglim Architecture joined forces in the design for the new 1,000-bed Yonsei Severance Hospital that opened May 4, 2005, in Seoul. Korean newspapers are calling it the “ubiquitous hospital” because the gigantic medical center incorporates a variety of electronic devices for near-total network connectivity.

    New York · 2005.0715
Five designers have joined the New York office of Hillier Architecture. Rae Slater is now interior designer and librarian; Kathy L. Kleiver is the office’s new marketing manager; Jira Seriraj, recently of Gensler, joins the firm as a project architect; Teresa Rampolla comes to the firm from Janko Rasic Architects; and Justin Boon is a draftsman for the firm.

    Washington · 2005.0714
The design firm ForrestPerkins announced the hire of Emlyn Altman as director of lighting and visualization.  Altman, who will be based in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office, brings to ForrestPerkins a decade of experience in the design industry. She is a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) where she is also a regular columnist for the IESNA magazine LD+A – published monthly worldwide. Her bimonthly column, “Digital Dialogue,” addresses computer issues related to the lighting design industry.

    New York · 2005.0713
Through an international competition, the Shanghai Planning Bureau has selected a design by the team of Beyer Blinder Belle Architects & Planners LLP and Balmori Associates Landscape Architects for redevelopment of the French Concession section of Shanghai, China. The area is in the northwest corner of the Luwan District, and is known for its high-end shopping, diplomatic missions, and elegant, historic buildings. The design, titled “Pathways Through History,” has integrated landscape and architectural structures, both new and existing, into a cohesive, flowing series of forms.
