DESERT COMMUNING

As part of its transition from commuter school to full-service polytechnic college campus, the growing Arizona State University East has a new student union (photo by Mark Boisclair). The goal of architecture firm Gould Evans was to create a place where students and faculty could meet, relax, and prepare for classes. Next week ArchitectureWeek contributing editor Michael J. Crosbie will explain how the architecture supports a growing sense of campus community.

AWARDS FOR TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE

At its annual user conference in May 2005, Bentley Systems, Incorporated announced the recipients of the 2005 BE Awards of Excellence. These awards showcase the imagination and technical mastery of organizations that use Bentley design and construction software to build everything from small buildings to major highways. One example is the Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Spallation Neutron Source (pictured) for scientific research and industrial development. Next week we'll see a few more of the selected projects.
