    Question

    Which was built first — Hagia Sophia (Istanbul) or Chartres Cathedral (France)?

    Answer

    Hagia Sophia is dated 537 — some 600 years before the start of construction of the Chartres Cathedral in 1134. The left, "flamboyant" spire of the cathedral was begun in 1507, nearly 400 years later.
