NEW MEETS OLD IN RIO

A 1918 building in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil has been given a new face by Oficina de Arquitetos. The remodeled Telecommunications Museum is a three-part dialog between new and old. The old building maintains its original character; the new is blazingly modern; and the space in between has been carefully crafted to generate harmony between the disparate parts. Next week we'll see how they all fit together.

GLASS IN ICELAND

Unlike most of Europe, Iceland has no stained glass tradition dating back to the Middle Ages. Windows were imported until the 20th century. Against this backdrop, in April 2005, artists, curators, critics, and scholars from 14 countries gathered at Kopavogur, Iceland for a comprehensive overview of the extraordinary recent developments in architectural glass art and to speculate about the future of the art form. Next week, writer Janet Collins will show us what they learned.
