Pritzker Prize-winning architect Richard Meier is designing his first project in Miami, the Beach House residential building. The site, which formerly housed the Beach House Hotel, is situated with more than 200 feet of beach front, with views of the ocean and a landscaped beach garden. The building will be 12 stories high with 101 residences. Features include wireless internet access, an integrated control system for appliances and electronics, foor-to-ceiling custom glass windows, and a roof level pool.

The 2005 grand prize in the National Sustainable Design Competition, sponsored by the International Interior Design Association, was awarded to Nicole Kelln. Kelln graduated this spring from Washington State University with a bachelor’s degree in interior design. The award includes an all-expense paid trip to the Greenbuild 2005 National Conference in Atlanta, a cash prize of $750 from the IIDA Foundation, and a year's membership in IIDA. The prize-winning work will be published in the IIDA magazine, Custom, and displayed on the IIDA web site.

The architecture firm of Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum, Inc. (HOK) is funding the construction upgrades, outfitting, staffing, and launch of a solar-powered diagnostic and treatment center in southeastern rural Kenya, in recognition of the firm’s 50th anniversary. Located at the 24-building Mbirikani Clinic complex, the HOK Diagnostic and Treatment Center will conduct X-ray procedures to screen patients for tuberculosis and other conditions and illnesses. The Center will be housed in a building renovated by Economic Housing Group (EHG), the Nairobi-based construction firm that built the Mbirikani Clinic complex using modular systems designed by architects at the University of Nairobi Housing and Research Unit.

Gensler Architecture, Design, and Planning Worldwide has been chosen to design MGM Mirage’s new Project Citycenter. Project Citycenter is currently the largest privately-funded project in the United States, with estimated costs at $4.7 billion. Plans for the project include a 4,000-room hotel and casino, three 400-room boutique hotels, 550,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor retail shops, dining and entertainment venues, and 1,650 residential units.

Brigade Gateway, a planned community conceived as a mixed-use urban center for Bangalore’s emerging economy and designed by HOK, has received premilinary zoning approval from local authorities. The project includes plans for an office tower, a major retail and dining center, a large hotel and conference facility, educational buildings, a cultural center, and a residential neighborhood for over 10,000 residents. Kenneth H. Drucker, AIA is leading the HOK design team for the project.

Chong Partners Architecture announced that Stephan Castellanos, FAIA has joined the firm as an associate partner. Previously, Castellanos served as California state architect for four years, where he developed the Excellence in Public Buildings Program to raise the level of design and operations of state buildings. He has also served as AIA secretary at the national level. Chong Partners has offices in San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego, and London.
