    Thom Mayne Pritzker Prize

    by ArchitectureWeek

This year's choice for Pritzker Prize laureate is Los Angeles architect Thom Mayne. He is known for breaking through traditional bounds of forms and materials, and his work has been chosen for numerous awards during his three-decade career.

Mayne is principal of Morphosis, meaning "manner of formation." The firm's recent built works to capture media attention include the Diamond Ranch High School, the Caltrans District 7 Headquarters, and the Dr. Theodore T. Alexander, Jr. Science Center School. He is currently working on a project in association with New York City's bid for the 2012 Olympics.

Mayne was born in 1944 and educated at the University of Southern California and Harvard University. In 1972 he formed his own firm which now employs 40 architects and designers. Throughout his career, Mayne has remained active in the academic world. He currently holds a tenured professorship at the University of California in Los Angeles and is a founder of the Southern California Institute of Architecture.

Architect Bill Lacy, speaking as the executive director of the Pritzker Prize, quotes from the jury citation: "Thom Mayne is a product of the turbulent 60s, who has carried that rebellious attitude and fervent desire for change into his practice, the fruits of which are only now becoming visible in a group of large scale projects."   >>>
