BOXED IN, IN SUBURBIA
In a Southern suburb of Dortmund, Germany, a 1940s-era single-family house has undergone a transformation. Originally topped by a pitched roof like that of its neighbors, the house now has an added apartment, a new shape, and the appearance of a wood block. The award-winning house has inserted a dialog of design perhaps novel to the traditional neighborhood. Next week we'll see how the house fits in.

DALI'S PRIVATE RETREAT
Throughout his life, Spanish artist Salvador Dalí played the role of provocateur. But behind his extravagance was a more subtle, private person. His formative years centered on the creation — with his wife Gala Diakonova — of a house in the remote Port of Lligat on the Mediterranean coast. Next week author Rachel Grossman will explain why the house reflects the true Dalí. (Photo by Rachel Grossman, authorized by the Gala-Dalí Foundation.)
