Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, FAIA, has been selected to receive the 2005 AIA Gold Medal, the highest honor bestowed on an individual by the American Institute of Architects. The award recognizes his collective works and his influence on the theory and practice of architecture.

Most recently in the limelight for his Olympic stadiums and public plazas in Athens, Calatrava has developed, over the past two decades for his distinctive blending of architecture, engineering, and sculpture. This artistry is evident in the Milwaukee Art Museum (2001), the Auditorio de Tenerife in Santa Cruz, Canary Islands (2003), and in bridges throughout the world.

Calatrava is the 61st AIA Gold Medalist, joining the ranks of Thomas Jefferson, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Cesar Pelli. He has won numerous awards and honorary degrees, and his work is much loved by the general public as well as the professional community.   >>>
