Respectful Remodel by ArchitectureWeek In an era when the fabric of traditional neighborhoods is being torn so that grotesquely oversized houses can be squeezed into normal-sized lots, at least one firm in Maryland is doing it differently. GTM Architects renovated and expanded the home of firm founder George Myers, and in its detailing showed respect for the century-old neighborhood. Although the "new" house is much larger than the original, the historically detailed expansion is tastefully tucked into its site without imposing on the local ambience. "We are finding that a significant trend in modern residential home design," says Myers, "is an expansion that masks the actual size of the addition." GTM has completed numerous renovations to the traditionally styled 1930s-era houses that are common in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area.
