HIGH-TECH WORKSPACES ON THE DANUBE

A collection of old industrial sheds and warehouses in Krems, Austria have experienced a metamorphosis into a high-tech research center for a leading supplier of textiles to the automotive industry — Eybl International (photo by Alexander Koller). By means of glazed roofing and careful spatial zoning, the architects have brought daylight deep into the large buildings. Next week we'll see the warehouses reborn as corporate work spaces.

THE SHORT LIFE OF THE MACHINEWORKS THEATER

How do you design a temporary theater on a miniscule budget? And ensure that the construction materials will be undamaged and reusable at the end of the performance space's ten-day life? In Portland, Oregon, eight volunteers from the staff of BOORA Architects put their heads together and came up with a fully functional theater (photo by Sally Schoolmaster), with ingenious use of visqueen walls and seating crafted from plastic buckets and carpet samples. Next week we'll see how the theater came together.
