Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #212
Question
Why would you hit your masonry foundation with your rebound hammer?
Answer
You are probably doing a rebound hammer test which evaluates masonry surface hardness. A specially designed impact hammer measures the rebound of a mass from the tested surface. This nondestructive test is useful in locating areas damaged by fire, freeze-thaw action, salt crystallization, or moisture penetration.
