CALIFORNIA ANNOUNCES DESIGN AWARDS

The California Council of the American Institute of Architects has chosen 20 design award winners for 2004. One of these, pictured, is a residential renovation in Santa Monica designed and built by Joel Blank and Susie Tashiro Architects. The small 1926 bungalow maintains its modest character but with a calm and uncompromising design. Next week we'll visit this house and the other selected projects.

ON "SOUTHERNNESS"

"If John F. Kennedy did indeed call Washington, D.C., a city of Southern efficiency and Northern charm, it was a statement characterized less by its deadly accuracy and double-edged sharpness than by the startling lack of ambiguity which went with it." So opens an essay by the late Charles Moore on the architecture of the southern United States. Next week we'll learn more about Moore's interpretation of southern charm and urbanity.
