AMERICAN LANDSCAPE AWARDS 2004 In July, the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) announced the recipients of its 2004 Professional Awards. Reflecting the breadth and environmental sensitivity of the profession itself, these exemplary projects range in scope from residential gardens to regional master plans.

STARI MOST — MOSTAR RECONNECTION When a beloved and highly symbolic historic bridge was destroyed during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina of the early 1990s, the whole world grieved. The single-arched Stari Most ("Old Bridge") in Mostar was erected in 1566 by architect Mimar Hajruddin at the height of the Ottoman Empire. It not only connected the city physically but, by the 20th century, had come to symbolize the coming together of many nationalities and ethnicities.

COMMERCIAL QUALITIES OF MONTRÉAL When a business community learns to appreciate the value of design excellence, an entire city can benefit. This is the lesson of the Commerce Design Montréal competition, which concluded its tenth annual round earlier this year. Twenty projects in the French-Canadian city demonstrate that design and business can help each other thrive.
