ASLA ANNOUNCES 2004 AWARDS
The American Society of Landscape Architects has announced the recipients of its 2004 Professional Awards. The projects range in scale from residential gardens to regional master plans. Receiving an award of honor in the design category is the Tidewater Residence, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, designed by Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects (photo by William Abranowicz). Next week we'll see a variety of winning projects that display, in the words of the jury: "great understanding of natural processes, considerable sensitivity to people, and a high level of design acumen."

"PRINTING" SCALE MODELS
One way to generate physical models of buildings is with a "3D Printer" made by the Z Corporation. Driven by data from a specially formatted CAD file, an ink cartridge filled with binder passes over a bed of powder, gradually building up a plaster form. Next week, Martin Doscher, of the California architecture firm Morphosis, will explain how the models are created and applied in collaborative design processes.
