    GEHRY AT MIT

    The latest installment in a billion-dollar construction program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has just opened on the Cambridge campus, and it's unlike anything else MIT has ever built.

    The Ray and Maria Stata Center, designed by Frank Gehry, is a rambling collage of odds and ends that now houses three MIT departments: the Computer Sciences and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems, and the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy.

    BRIDGING BRASILIA

    The growing city of Brasilia needed a third bridge over a lake that separated half its inhabitants from their places of work. In response to a competition, architect Alexandre Chan and structural engineer Mario Vila Verde, both from Rio de Janeiro, produced the winning concept: a daring, dancing variation on an ancient structural form.

    LIBESKIND IN LONDON

    The new, modestly sized Graduate Centre for London Metropolitan University is the first permanent building in London by Daniel Libeskind. It's not a glamorous commission compared to his World Trade Center project in New York, nor does it have a particularly beautiful or meaningful site, as does his Jewish Museum in Berlin.
