GREGORY BURGESS — AUSTRALIA'S GOLD MEDALIST
Australian architect Gregory Burgess has been named the 2004 Gold Medalist by the Royal Australian Institute of Architects. Peter Davey, editor of Architectural Review (UK), referred to Burgess as one of the few architects worldwide “who tend the flame of hope and carry the lamp of truth in a world that seems increasingly to have no values other than profit and the market in its grossest form." Next week we'll see why Burgess deserves the accolades.

GREENING THE SCHEMATIC DESIGN PHASE
Since April 2004, the free Web service, "Green Building Studio," has been available from GeoPraxis. This engineering analysis tool is designed to deliver interoperability between CAD design teams and engineers using energy analysis models such as DOE-2, eQUEST, and EnergyPlus. It gives architects feedback about the energy consequences of their design at an earlier phase of the process than has normally been possible. Next week author Susan Smith will explain how it is being adopted by such firms as HOK.
