TOP TEN GREEN BUILDINGS
In recognition of Earth Day 2004, The American Institute of Architects and its Committee on the Environment selected ten exemplary "green" buildings that protect and enhance the environment. One of these is the Genzyme Center (photo by Anton Grassl) designed by Behnisch, Behnisch & Partner Inc. All of the building's environmental design strategies both contribute to its expected platinum LEED rating and establish an open spatial atmosphere for the occupants. Next week we'll take a look at this and the other nine exemplars.

MODERNISM IN SERBIA
Belgrade is one of the most under-appreciated centers of regional modernism of the 1920s and 1930s. Among the nearly forgotten body of work is the villa of Stevka Milicevic (photo courtesy Arhitektura, Ljubljana), designed by brothers Branko and Petar Krstic. At the beginning of Serbia's modernist period, neither clients nor architects were ready for a radical change, so the earliest modern houses of the 1920s kept traditional interiors while modernizing the exteriors. Next week, author Ljiljana Blagojevic will tell us more about this cultural phenomenon.
