GOING GREEN IN NEW ENGLAND
In March, 2004, the Northeast Green Building Awards were presented by the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association. Among the high-performance buildings recognized for achievement was the Natural Lands Trust Headquarters Expansion, in Media, Pennsylvania, designed by Susan Maxman & Partners. The building's open plan supports staff collaboration and takes advantage of clerestory windows to bring natural light and ventilation into the center of the workspace. (Gregory Benson Photography) Next week we'll take a closer look at this and a few other award recipients.

LAYERING OLD AND NEW
In Ortakoy, Istanbul, a 200-year-old ruin has returned to 21st-century life as a multipurpose event space in a busy entertainment district. Global Architectural Development, a firm born in Turkey, now transplanted in New York, built a glass box within the masonry remains. The layers of disparate materials coexist in a statement that speaks of the city's past and future. Next week we'll see how this amalgam came to be.
