25-Year Award to Pei's East Wing

    by ArchitectureWeek

In 1981, the East Wing of the National Gallery of Art, designed by I.M. Pei, was the recipient of a national honor award from the American Institute of Architects. Last month, the Washington D.C. building was further honored with the AIA's Twenty-Five Year Award for architecture of enduring significance.

A jury of architects concluded that, "after a quarter century, this icon of contemporary architecture in a city of traditional monuments continues to delight and impress visitors from all over the world." To further meet the criteria of eligibility for this award, the art museum has been meticulously maintained and continues to serve its original purpose.

The 604,000-square-foot (56,000-square-meter) post-tensioned concrete structure is clad in pink Tennessee marble with broad expanses of glass. It was described at its opening in 1978 by Washington Post architecture critic Wolf Von Eckardt as "an architectonic symphony of light and marble, color and glass, painting and sculpture."   >>>
