In the health-care field, change comes quickly as medical technology advances and care-giving methods evolve. This change is reflected in contemporary hospital architecture, perhaps most visibly in patient rooms, where flexible design is critical.
What will the adaptable patient room of the future be like? That's the question Ellerbe Becket medical planners, architects, interior designers, and engineers set out to answer.

HOUSING HIGH AND LOW
Spanish architect Roberto Pérez-Guerras has worked on a diversity of projects since the mid-1970s. He describes his design process as "fueled by the objective of creative imagination as a cultural evolution" and by "the attempt to obtain spaces for cohabitation out of sites whose value has not been realized." Here to illustrate these guiding principles are two very different residential complexes by the firm of Pérez-Guerras. — Editor

DANCES WITH BUILDING
Three years ago, when a father and his daughter were looking at colleges and evaluating dance programs, they visited the University of Arizona in Tucson. There they discovered one of the country's best dance programs with one of the worst facilities. The man offered to donate funds for a new dance theater if the university and its College of Fine Arts would each match his gift. The result: the new Stevie Eller Dance Theatre.
