AIA HONOR AWARDS 2004
When the furniture company Cisco Brothers decided to build a new showroom in Los Angeles, they realized their impact could extend beyond a single building. They had ambitions to uplift the entire South L.A. neighborhood that is home to numerous furniture manufacturers. Now, phase one of the resulting master plan has received national recognition through an honor award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

FARNSWORTH HOUSE SAVED
On the morning of December 18, 2003, historic preservationists were casting a worried eye on the Farnsworth House, designed by 20th-century architect Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe. The famous 1951 steel-and-glass house was to be auctioned at Sotheby's that day, and its fate would depend on whoever emerged as high bidder.

HIGH MUSEUM REILLUMINATED
"Light, whether direct or filtered, admitted through skylights, ribbon glazing, clerestory strips, or minimal perforations in the panel wall, is a consistent preoccupation throughout; apart from its functional aspect, [light] is a symbol of the museum's role as a place of aesthetic illumination and enlightened cultural values. The primary intention of the architecture is to encourage the discovery of these values, and to foster a contemplative appreciation of the museum's collection through its own spatial experience." — Richard Meier, from Richard Meier: Architect
