Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #173
Question
Should you allow your mason to use either lake water or river water when mixing mortar?
Answer
Neither. Water fit for masonry construction must also be fit for human consumption. It must be clean, potable, free of organic materials, and neither acid nor alkaline. Lake and river water could contain organic impurities that might affect mortar properties. It might also contain salts that could contribute to efflorescence.
