DO-IT-YOURSELF ELECTRICITY
After a failure of the electrical grid in the eastern part of North America in August 2003, many energy "experts" were quick to recommend repairing and improving the old infrastructure. But they may have been ignoring better solutions in the form of decentralized power and conservation. Increasingly, homeowners are producing their own electricity. Next week we'll see how some are even creating a surplus power — using roof-mounted photovoltaic arrays — to sell to local utility companies.
