    South Atlantic AIA Design Awards

    by ArchitectureWeek

The South Atlantic Region (SAR) of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) announced in September 2003 the winners of its annual design awards program. Despite the record 231 entries received, four of the five architecture awards went to a single firm, Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects of Atlanta, Georgia.

One of the firm's projects is "Mountain Tree House." This addition called on local builders and craftspeople from the mountains of northern Georgia who were willing to stretch their skills beyond their usual methods. The result is a sculptural contrast between rough and smooth materials. The jury noted: "Being in the forest is intensified in this project as the language of the architecture extends itself into the landscape... You can tell that the architect had a really good time doing this project. "

A second, contrasting project from Mack Scogin Merrill Elam is "Willow Street Housing" at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. This 330-bed student residential hall with cafe, classrooms, and gathering space has a building area of 108,000 square feet (10,000 square meters) on an urban site and trolley-car route. The building is a composition of solids and voids, making spaces at street level where students can sit and interact. "How you turn the corner can be the rotten part of most projects," said the jury, "but this nagging issue was beautifully handled on this building."   >>>
