In the summer of 2003, the historic Orpheum Theatre in Sioux City, Iowa reopened its doors after decades of neglect and abuse. Built in 1927, it is once again a source of civic pride. The restoration architects were grateful that much of the historic fabric had only been concealed, not destroyed, in earlier remodels. Noted photographer G.R. Lindblade extensively documented the rehabilitation project through still photos and video. Next week we'll see Lindblade's view of the process and product of the restoration.
HIGH TECH ARCHITECTURE
The term "High Tech" when applied to buildings most often refers to revealed structure, exposed ducts, machine-like aesthetics, and expressionistic honesty of materials. A familiar example is the Centre Pompidou in Paris designed in the 1970s by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, with engineering from Ove Arup & Partners. Next week Leonard R. Bachman will explain why this "dynamic servicing machine" became an icon for "high tech."
