    MOSHE SAFDIE PEABODY ESSEX ADDITION

    Moshe Safdie's architecture continues to intrigue. Buildings such as the National Gallery in Ottawa, the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, Exploration Place Science Center and Children's Museum in Wichita, Kansas, and the Vancouver Public Library in Canada each exhibit the Israeli-born architect's passion for complex geometries, elegant materials, and urban place-making. The new $125 million addition to the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, is no exception.

    CREATIVE KINDERGARTEN

    Caesarea, Israel is a city founded more than 2,000 years ago by Herod the Great, who dedicated it to Caesar Augustus. Many of Herod's structures are well preserved — the palace, aqueduct, hippodrome, and the amphitheater, which is a modern venue for concerts and plays, valued for its superb acoustics.

    BLUFF HOUSE

    Since the mid-1960s, the firm Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects has created a series of houses across the country for art collectors, exploring the connection between art and craft. One such house perches on a Seattle-area hillside, deferring to nature. Architecture critic Paul Goldberger says of the firm's work: "this is an experiential architecture, not a theoretical one...marked by a self-assured and sensual presence, shaped by light, texture, materiality, and scale." — Editor
