SOLUTIA GLASS AWARDS 2003 In Nagoya, Japan, concertgoers visiting the new Oasis 21 will be treated to a unique outdoor ceiling. Not only is the roof above them made of glass, it is also filled with water, further refracting the light received in the public spaces below. This civic structure by architect Hideki Casai of the Obayashi Corporation is one of several recent winners of the 2003 Solutia Design Awards.

REMEMBERING GEOFFREY BAWA, 1919-2003 The beloved Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa died in his native city of Colombo on May 27, at age 83. He will be remembered as a prolific and influential designer who drew on many traditions but especially those of his own people. His works — from houses to hotels — are noted for their sensitivity to the South Asian culture and climate.

AIA CONVENES IN SAN DIEGO The American Institute of Architects 2003 national convention was held in May in the Southern California city of San Diego. AIA members came to the seaside city for continuing education seminars, to conduct institute business, and to enjoy visits to nearby architectural attractions, such as the famous Salk Institute designed by Louis Kahn.
