AIA/ALA LIBRARY BUILDING AWARDS 2003 The American Library Association and the American Institute of Architects have selected the recipients of the 2003 AIA/ALA Library Building Awards. The seven projects exemplify excellence in the design of literary settings from the renovation of a historic reading room to a temporary facility with a tropical flair.

BUILDINGS FOR EARTH DAY As architects become more aware of their role in protecting the natural environment, they begin to view "sustainable design" more broadly. In addition to reducing consumption of fossil fuels, successful "green" architecture also improves comfort for building occupants, protects and repairs its immediate surroundings, and makes a positive contribution to the community.

I. M. PEI'S CONSTRUCTION INNOVATION The National Building Museum and Turner Construction Company have awarded Chinese-American architect I. M. Pei, FAIA, the second annual Henry C. Turner Prize for Innovation in Construction Technology. This award recognizes notable advances and high achievement in construction methods and processes.

JØRN UTZON PRITZKER PRIZE Danish architect Jørn Utzon, best known for his design of the Sydney Opera House in Australia, has been chosen as the 2003 Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. This prestigious honor is widely considered to be the "Nobel Prize" for architecture.
