Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #144
Question
Efflorescence can cause spalling. True or false?
Answer
False. Efflorescence (a staining due to dissolved salts leaching through to a masonry face) is an aesthetic rather than structural problem. Cryptoflorescence (salt crystal build-up behind glazed units or water-repellent coatings) may cause spalling.
