Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #142
Question
Which kind of tradesmen might use the following terms? fleuri-cut, lewis-holes, broach, and lipping.
Answer
This is the jargon of stonework. Fleuri-cut refers to cutting stone parallel to the natural bedding plane. Lewis-holes are holes cut in stone for lifting. Broach means to remove material between drilled holes; it is also a type of mason's chisel. Lipping is warped or twisting paving with edges that don’t align.
