Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #122
Question
Is it always true in steel design that least weight equals least cost?
Answer
This was often true in the past. With today's labor costs, savings obtained by minimizing fabrication and erection times can sometimes offset the cost of higher steel weight. For example, it is often beneficial to accept greater steel weight in order to eliminate labor-intensive details such as stiffeners and reinforcement plates.
