Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #121
Question
In construction jargon, what does "three in eight" refer to?
Answer
Common brick was sized so that one long, two wide, or three high, with their mortar joints, "laid" eight inches (20 centimeters). This allowed running bond, stretcher courses, rowlock courses, and soldier courses to have joint alignment that is no longer possible with modular bricks that are not "three in eight."
