Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #120
Question
Back in the days before glulam beams, framing was often done with heavy timber. Framing members were often specified as "FOHC," or "free of heart center." Why was wood specified FOHC?
Answer
Avoiding the "heart center," or core of the log, helped prevent the timber from warping, splitting, and cupping.
