    SAVING MODERN MOMENTS

    Some 500 architectural experts came to Paris in September 2002 to discuss the plight of a threatened species: architecture of the 20th-century Modern Movement. The 7th International DOCOMOMO Conference met in the UNESCO Headquarters designed by Marcel Breuer, one of the movement's masters.

    SOLAR HOUSES SHINE

    In a dramatic demonstration of design with solar energy, 14 North American universities recently competed in a Solar Decathlon in Washington, D.C. The students were tasked with designing and building solar-powered houses that would blend aesthetics and modern conveniences with maximum energy efficiency. The overarching goal of the competition was to illustrate the benefits of solar energy for a wide audience.

    AIACC 2002 DESIGN AWARDS

    The American Institute of Architects, California Council (AIACC) honored 15 of its members in its annual design awards program in September, 2002. Special recognition went to two contemporary designs and a historic preservation project.
