Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #115
Question
To a doctor, a tympanum is the middle ear; to a musician, it is a drum. What is a tympanum to an architect?
Answer
A tympanum is the recessed, usually triangular space enclosed between the horizontal and sloping cornices of a pediment (in effect, a recessed gable end); or, similarly, the space between an arch and the horizontal head of a door or window below.
