GEORGIA PRESERVATION AWARDS In May, 2002, the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation selected 20 buildings to be honored for excellence in restoration and rehabilitation. One of the award-winning restoration projects was the childhood home of early 20th-century President Woodrow Wilson. The accurate restoration project gave the historic Augusta house the features and character it had during the Civil War and Reconstruction era.

SPIRIT OF WOOD The Wood in Culture Association of Finland has announced that it will confer the 2002 "Spirit of Nature" Wood Architecture Award to Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. The award recognizes the achievements of a person or group whose work exemplifies architectural excellence and a progressive and creative use of wood. The association hopes that the award will both increase international respect for wood buildings and building components and improve their quality by fostering traditions and inspiring young architects.

ARCHILAB CONFERENCE 2002 ORLéANS A small French city tackled a very large topic when the fourth annual architectural conference "Archilab" met in Orléans to ponder "Earth Economics." As in past years, the curators Marie-Ange Brayer and Béatrice Simonot offered innovative architectural research programs, exploring the range of approaches and projects of the participating architects. Their goal is to create, through an openness and curiosity toward all innovative movements, a space for a creative discussion about the challenges of architecture today.
