Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #96
Question
True or false:
A. Plain-sawn (flat-sawn) lumber yields the widest boards with the least waste?
B. Heartwood tends to be darker than sapwood?
Answer
A. True. Plain-sawn (flat-sawn) lumber is also the most common and readily available lumber. It produces a cathedral grain pattern and its usable width is only limited by the wood's tendency to cup.
B. True. Heartwood, in which the cells have become filled with natural deposits, tends to be darker than the outer sapwood layers.
