British AIA Design Awards 2002

by Katharine Logan

Each year American architects living and working in Britain gather to celebrate architectural achievements in their adoptive home. The Excellence in Design Awards, a program of the American Institute of Architects London/UK Chapter, honors projects by UK-based architects wherever they work and by international architects working in the United Kingdom.

This year's winners, reflecting a range of building types, were presented February 12, 2002 at a ceremony at the British Museum in London. One of four top professional honors went to Zaha Hadid Architects for the Terminus and Car Park at Hoenheim North, Strasbourg, France. About this project juror Piers Gough commented: "The more I look at it, the more perfect it gets."

The three other professional winners were Patel Taylor's "hugely habitable" Thames Barrier Park, Wilkinson Eyre Architects' "functionally brilliant" Gateshead Millennium Bridge, and the "Rolls Royce of a building," 88 Wood Street by Richard Rogers. (The latter two were featured in ArchitectureWeek in the past year.)

Winners of the Student Travel Award included Max Ngai and Fred Pittman, both of the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and joint entrants James Taylor and Michael Shaw from Edinburgh University.   >>>
