    Quizzical Pursuit
    —The Architecture Puzzler

    Created by Dave Guadagni

    Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
    Architecture Puzzler #90

    Question

Which of the following woods are close-grained? Open grained? Maple, cherry, poplar, oak, beech, ash, hickory, elm, and birch.

    Answer

Close-grain woods have an even texture of small pores across the growth rings (maple, cherry, poplar, beech, and birch).

Open-grain woods visible bands of large, fast-growing cells of springwood and slow-growing denser cells of summerwood (red and white oak, ash, hickory, and elm).
