Answer
Close-grain woods have an even texture of small pores across the growth rings (maple, cherry, poplar, beech, and birch).
Open-grain woods visible bands of large, fast-growing cells of springwood and slow-growing denser cells of summerwood (red and white oak, ash, hickory, and elm).
