    Quizzical Pursuit
    —The Architecture Puzzler

    Created by Dave Guadagni

    Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
    Architecture Puzzler #85

    Question

For what application would you specify flamed finished granite?

    Answer

Flamed finished granite is heavily textured and is often used as slip-resistant flooring in commercial lobbies and exterior walkways. This finish is obtained by running gas jets over the stone. The burning gas at 3100 to 3600 degrees Fahrenheit (1700 to 2000 degrees Centigrade) causes a rapid evaporation of moisture from within the stone causing crystals at the surface to explode.
