Solution to Last Week's Puzzler
Architecture Puzzler #74
Question
What is refractory mortar and where would you use it? How it is different from other mortars?
Answer
Refractory mortar is used for firebricks and clay flue linings in fireplaces. It uses sodium silicate or calcium aluminate instead of the calcium silicate typically used as a binder in portland cement mortars.
