    In the Landscape of Murcutt

    by Brook Muller

In July, 2001 a group of travel-weary, anxious architects, students, and teachers from around the world stepped off a bus and descended a steep one-lane road to the Bundannon property on the Shoalhaven River, about three hours south of Sydney.

This special place, the former home and studio of the Australian painter Arthur Boyd, was, for many of us, our first introduction to Australia. Later in the afternoon we met Glenn Murcutt and the other tutors of the 2001 Glenn Murcutt Master Class.

Murcutt is said to be Australia's most internationally famous architect and is known for his environmentally sensitive design. The two-week master class gave 23 practitioners and advanced architecture students the opportunity to study and design with Murcutt and colleagues in inspiring Australian settings.

The other tutors included architects Richard Leplastrier and Peter Stutchbury and professors Lindsay Johnston and Michael Ostwald of the University of Newcastle.

The building perches on the edge of two worlds, facing a pastoral meadow that slopes down to the river, with it back to the "bush" of steep eucalyptus-covered hills.
